2020: The Year History Can't Forget

Posted on: 20/04/2021

Harris Federation is currently compiling an anthology of creative writing from students across the federation entitled ‘2020: The Year History Can’t Forget’.

Here's one of our entries by a Year 13 student.

Tior

Is BAME manifesting the right cause?

Justified.... praised or ridiculed, my ideology is filled with truth.

Argue that I’m incompetent, but the ignorance off your tongue

is triggered by my self-confidence.

BLACK LIVES MATTER, yes, they do.

Our Melanin Kings and Queens rose in 2020, to re-discover the truth.

Society has risen and united the Black community

into a stand against all forms of prejudice that doom this world;

voices are being heard, pain is being felt

like Frederick Douglas in the 18th Century, who was pummeled with the belt.

Our Kings & Queens protest about police brutality, how George Floyd suffocated and the officer who grinned happily.

Of course, there’s a disparity, however in reality,

much of our black community is the root of our calamity.

We argue that Metropolitan police are discriminative in their power

towards our young Black Kings, but our community stands silent

against our brothers and sisters, committing such sins.

Our Grandmothers and fathers dug deep to provide a meal on the table,

to provide us with a foundation, in an era where they were spat at,

beaten and separated through immigration.

In response, our black community reside to violence, gang signs and county lines

as a symbol of our appreciation.

MPs in the commons cackle away, whilst the division in our ethnic group is clearly unawaken.

For our black community, I would like to spread my admiration,

for your continued excellence to achieving your goals and being an inspiration to our youth. Who’ve lost faith and guidance during a world still battling racism.
