2020: The Year History Can't Forget

Posted on: 24/03/2021

Harris Federation is currently compiling an anthology of creative writing from students across the federation entitled ‘2020: The Year History Can’t Forget’.

Here's one of our entries from Krysta (Year 12) and few questions put to her about studying at Harris Professional Skills 6th Form. Krysta is currently studying the GCSE English and Maths and her option course is and Extended Diploma in Digital Media.

Black Queens U.N.I.T.Y

Your skin is a beautiful place to live in, your

hair is grass from the heavens and your shape

is a gorgeous sculpture. You’re not magic;

magic is only an illusion. I’m sorry that the lack

of appreciation that we face seems to be in

seclusion. We are more than a miracle, an

unexpected blessing and the haters are jealous –

they don’t want to be confessing.

Everyone just assumes its drugs we’re selling

out and selling in but they’re just intimidated

and envious of the gifted melanin. The news

and Criminal injustices brings me frowns but

ladies just remember real Queens fix each

other’s Crowns. So, let’s live, lighten up the mood

and not cower.

Let us black Queens come together and fight the power.

The End

Why did you apply to HPS6F?

I applied to Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form because I wanted a fresh start to focus on myself and my future.

What have you enjoyed the most whilst studying your course?

Socialising with friends and classmates and surprisingly building a good rapport with the teachers. I also like getting recognition for striving to be the best I can be, it makes me feel appreciated.

Have you had any challenges and how did you overcome them?

I had minor challenges getting along with certain students. I overcame the challenges by focusing on my school work instead and trying to do things to the best of my ability. Being positive and confident in every single way.  At the end of term, I was awarded with certificates for performing well, not only was this empowering, but I am starting to see the impact of the effort and commitment I have put into my studies.

How would you encourage a student thinking of applying here? What would you say?

I would say do what brings you happiness. The school is a calm community. Staff here are very welcoming and helpful as they pay attention to every student and give recognition when due.

How have you managed to keep on track with work through lock down? Has it been easy or challenging?

Some parts have been easy but I struggled with keeping up with the momentum. It was relaxing to do my work in peace even though it did get boring eventually.

Where would you like to see yourself by the end of the course?

I would like to see myself more confident than before, developing my independence as I begin to transition into adulthood.
